Summary

Gene Kim returns to Parts Unlimited, the fictional company from The Phoenix Project, this time from the perspective of software development. Maxine, a senior lead developer and architect, is exiled to the Phoenix Project as punishment for contributing to a payroll outage, and has to survive inside a bureaucracy where nothing gets done without committees, paperwork, and approvals. A group of misfits approaches her, wanting to overthrow that order, free developers from it, and bring joy back to technology work so the business can compete amid digital disruption. Maxine is drawn into the group and eventually becomes one of its leaders, putting her at odds with the same organizational powers Bill confronted in the first novel. Along the way the book lays out what it calls the Five Ideals of Software Development.
