Book
SQL Queries for Mere Mortals, 4th Edition
A Hands-On Guide to Data Manipulation in SQL
John L. Viescas
Summary
A tutorial on writing SQL queries that follows the SQL standard instead of one vendor's dialect. It opens with what makes a database relational and how to check that table structures are sound, then moves through SELECT, expressions, sorting and filtering, thinking in sets, inner and outer joins, UNION, subqueries, grouping and filtering grouped data, and statements that update, insert and delete sets of rows. The final part takes on harder problems: combined NOT and AND conditions, CASE, and unlinked and driver tables. The fourth edition adds chapters on complex calculations over groups and on window functions. Sample databases are provided for Access, SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Target Readers
- Developers and DBAs who write queries against Access, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL or another SQL-based system
- Students and database users learning SQL from the SELECT statement upward

Database Design for Mere Mortals, 4th Edition
25th Anniversary Edition
Michael J. Hernandez
Reason: SQL Queries for Mere Mortals begins by checking that the database structure is sound, in its second chapter, before any query is written. Having worked through tables, keys and relationships as a design process first, you can read the join and subquery chapters knowing why the tables connect the way they do. Both books belong to the For Mere Mortals series and neither depends on a particular database product.

SQL Performance Explained
Everything Developers Need to Know about SQL Performance
Markus Winand
Reason: SQL Queries for Mere Mortals concentrates on how to express SELECT, joins, subqueries and grouping in standard SQL. Once writing a WHERE clause or a join no longer takes thought, SQL Performance Explained picks up the next question about those same clauses: how they use an index.

Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties, 4th Edition
Advanced SQL Programming
Joe Celko
Reason: SQL Queries for Mere Mortals introduces thinking in sets in its seventh chapter and ends with harder problems built on CASE and unlinked tables; the fourth edition also adds a chapter on window functions. For a reader who can work through all of that and wants to push set-oriented SQL further, Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties is the next book.
